U.H. Bookstore
Something I talked about already with Priss. Decided I needed to vent some more.
University of Hawaii at Manoa. The Bookstore.
They overcharge. This is actually a legitimate complaint. I was forced to buy a book there last semester because I couldn’t find the damn thing anywhere else, and failed to order it online with enough leeway to get it on time. So I grabbed it, paid for it, and on a whim, peeled off the barcode sticker on the back. Guess what? The price printed on the book itself was less than the price they charged me. Not by too much, but tell me, what is the freaking point of tacking on nearly four extra dollars to the cover price? Shit, the sign with what they charged for the used copies (which they didn’t have any of) was about the same price if I had found a brand-spanking new copy at Borders. Just one more way to milk the students dry. And when you try to sell them back, they might give you five bucks for a book you paid fifty for. And then they sell them as used for forty-five. Bastards.
One tactic of not spending any money is to try and get the library’s copy, but they usually only have one, and someone else is always faster to grab it than you. And since the main library sustained serious flood damage from the last big rain, it has become a less than reliable source. Oh, and the news say that another big fucking storm with 60 mph winds is on its way, and I have no idea if anything was done to prevent the campus from flooding again, so I don’t have much hope for the library.
(Oh, and for any of you out there who wants to know why I don’t volunteer to help clean out the library to help get it running faster–no thanks. The flood went through the bio-med buildings and all the biohazard warnings surrounding the place makes me less than confident about contamination. It doesn’t help that at least one of the workers got leptospirosis, a potentially fatal disease. I didn’t quit smoking to get cut down by some bacteria. If that makes me a selfish bitch, so be it.)
Back to my rant. No more money for the Bookstore from me. I got some Border giftcards for Christmas, and plan to get next semester’s books with them.
And at the end of the semester, sell ‘em to directly to other students (for a reasonable price), and cut the Bookstore the hell out of the equation. Take that!
